Or maybe you&#8217;re the type who has &#8220;tried everything&#8221;? Have you been losing and gaining the same 20 pounds for the last decade?\u00a0<\/p><p>If you&#8217;ve said &#8220;yes&#8221; to any of these, then undereating is definitely holding you back from getting lean and strong.\u00a0<\/p><p>And, theses are the themes I see in clients who apply for a set of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emilyfieldrd.com\/macro-calculation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Custom Macros<\/a>\u00a0from my team. And when they receive my recommendations, which typically involve eating <i>more<\/i>, I&#8217;m often met with an email reply along the lines of, &#8220;Are you sure I should be eating this much?&#8221;<\/p><p>Yes, you should be eating that much! I am sorry you &#8220;feel&#8221; like 1800 calories is too much for you. Or that 2100 calories is more than you boyfriend eats. Or that 2300 calories &#8220;scares you a little&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p><p>When you come to me saying that you struggle with:\u2063&#8230;<br \/>&gt;&gt; hunger \u2013 like can\u2019t be trusted with XYZ in the house, hunger\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; cravings \u2013 intense, predictable, need a fix after dinner cravings\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; recovery \u2013 need an afternoon nap, tired\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; soreness \u2013 takes me a while to loosen up, tender to the touch sore\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; agitation \u2013 snap at my kids grouchy, don\u2019t talk to me till I\u2019ve had a snack grumpy\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; constipation \u2013 need coffee + water + lots of vegetables + a workout (and nothing less!) to be regular\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; gym plateaus \u2013 don\u2019t know what giving 100% feels like anymore, going through the motions\u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; sleep \u2013 annoyingly can\u2019t fall asleep or stay asleep \u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; problematic periods \u2013 don\u2019t know what you\u2019re gonna get each cycle \u2063\u2063<br \/>&gt;&gt; cold \u2013 you wish you could bring your space heater with you\u2063\u2063<br \/>\u2063\u2063<br \/>&#8230;you bet I\u2019m gonna tell you to eat more!<\/p><p>I know it&#8217;s tough to see the correlation between these symptoms and undereating. And it&#8217;s unfortunate that our society has conditioned us to think that &#8220;eating less and moving more&#8221; is always the answer. Once you\u2019ve used up what carbs are available, your body looks for alternative sources of energy (typically amino acids from protein), for more fuel.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00a0But unfortunately, the process of breaking down muscle for fuel doesn&#8217;t happen quick enough, which is why it&#8217;s important to have enough carbs available. Without enough carbs in the diet for the &#8220;quick fuel&#8221; your body requires during strength training, you&#8217;ll hit that &#8220;no gas left in the tank&#8221; feeling during your workout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Exercise also makes tiny tears in the muscle fibers, and in that post workout rebuild, muscles grow. When fuel stores are low, this is among the first to go. Think about a ship that&#8217;s sinking: you&#8217;re gonna dump the heaviest items from the ship first (muscle). It&#8217;s pretty hard to have a lean, strong physique without muscle on your frame.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">The double whammy?<\/span><\/p><p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">The less lean muscle on your frame, the lower your metabolism. You&#8217;re setting yourself up for fat loss resistance with undereating by way of a lower metabolism.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9bb0c46 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9bb0c46\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-44192a9\" data-id=\"44192a9\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0bf4a4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0bf4a4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span style=\"font-size: 2rem;font-style: normal;font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-primary-font-weight )\">undereating SACRIFICES LEAN MUSCLE FOR FUEL<\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c6c3a0d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c6c3a0d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-da5ebec\" data-id=\"da5ebec\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0307a63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0307a63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Carbohydrates are \u201cmuscle sparing&#8221;, meaning when your body has enough of them, it won\u2019t draw fuel from muscle tissue to make up for overall low energy (think: sinking ship example above).<\/span><\/p><p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Alternatively, if there aren&#8217;t enough carbohydrates for fuel, your body will start breaking down muscle tissue so it can use amino acids for energy. Without enough enzymes to break your food down, gas, bloating, and other GI issues become common.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Sex hormone production is also non-essential and can mean period problems, skin issues, vitamin and mineral absorption issues,<\/span> <span class=\"JsGRdQ\">low sex drive, poor sleep, energy slumps or overall fatigue.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">It&#8217;s tougher to develop a lean, strong physique without digestion, hormones, sleep and energy on point!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9255cb4 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9255cb4\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-875ca98\" data-id=\"875ca98\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-848779a elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"848779a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9afadf1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9afadf1\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-dc5cfac\" data-id=\"dc5cfac\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9be397b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9be397b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Do you struggle with any of these signs and symptoms? Start by tracking your eats &#8211; but! resist the urge to change anything about your habits.\u2063<br \/>2. Get at least a week under your belt (better if it\u2019s more!)\u2063<br \/>3. Compare your average protein, fat and carbohydrate consumption to the recommendations from my <a href=\"https:\/\/emilyfieldrd.com\/macros-guide\/\">DIY Macros Guide<\/a>. \u2063<br \/>4. If you\u2019re REAL far off from the suggested calories and macros, make adjustments to your meals so you are eating closer and closer to your needs.<\/p><p>I know it can be scary to eat more when you&#8217;ve been told that you should always eat less. But I&#8217;ll leave you with this &#8211; what if you tried something different? What if you gave it 6, 9, even 12 months?
