Let me explain.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortisol is a hormone that functions to mobilize fuel stores for energy, regulate sleep cycles and support the immune system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortisol is often talked about in relation to stress because when you\u2019re under stress, cortisol is released from the adrenal glands which triggers some events:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobilize (or break down and release) stored fuel, giving the body a burst of energy from carbohydrates to use right away<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stimulate the release of adrenaline to increase heart rate and blood pressure<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combined, these processes are called the \u201cfight or flight\u201d response. You\u2019ve probably heard of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting chased by a lion? No problem, that acute stress will stimulate the breakdown of carbohydrates so your cells can utilize that quick energy to run away fast! It will allow your heart to beat faster and harder so you can get blood to your limbs (run legs run!) quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once that perceived threat has gone away (the lion stops chasing you), cortisol and adrenaline levels should go back down, which returns heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels to normal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the problem is that the body doesn\u2019t know the difference between needing to run from a lion and getting cut off in traffic &#8211; so the stress response in the body is the same, no matter the type of stressor we\u2019re under.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And unfortunately, in today\u2019s fast paced, high pressure culture, many of us remain in that \u201cfight or flight\u201d mode constantly, and this chronically elevated stress is what is associated with a host of downstream problems, which can lead to an inability to gain lean muscle.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s talk about how that happens.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-31dfbb5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"31dfbb5\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0637e32\" data-id=\"0637e32\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b00f4e2\" data-id=\"b00f4e2\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df51934 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"df51934\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Increased cortisol makes recovery from workouts harder<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2856e31\" data-id=\"2856e31\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9298ce1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9298ce1\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-631769f\" data-id=\"631769f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d00a357 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d00a357\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Muscle fibers tear from the stimulus you put your body through during exercise. Microtears in the muscles are a good thing because what results after proper repair is stronger, bigger, denser muscles in response to that exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">But, high cortisol leads to muscle tension, reduced blood flow to the muscles and lactic acid build up which, when taken together, will hinder muscle growth altogether.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">And, cortisol leaves your cells starved for carbohydrates which is a primary building block needed during training and to repair and rebuild muscles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">This combination of events makes it incredibly difficult to recover properly from workouts or set you up nicely for future training sessions. You\u2019re going to be very sore, probably hungry, and unable to progress in your programming, which means you\u2019re less likely to build lean muscle mass and develop a strong, curvy body.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-aecb952 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"aecb952\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-61822e8\" data-id=\"61822e8\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0292dc7\" data-id=\"0292dc7\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3b91dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b3b91dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Increased cortisol inhibits muscle growth<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5ffd6f6\" data-id=\"5ffd6f6\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d1a023c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d1a023c\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d33d7c3\" data-id=\"d33d7c3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0b7a24 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0b7a24\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">The presence of cortisol makes the environment of our body a \u201ccatabolic\u201d one &#8211; as opposed to an \u201canabolic\u201d one. This simply means that the body is focused on breaking down, not building up (cc the breakdown of stored carbohydrates to access in the event of a lion chasing us!)<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">In that \u201ccatabolic\u201d process, not only are stored carbohydrates broken down for use, but stored protein is broken down too. Where is protein stored? Muscles &#8211; all our organs (like the heart) have muscle cells, and of course, our skeletal muscles like your quads, hamstrings and glutes are made of muscle cells, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Think about it like this: your cells are starved! Immediate energy is needed. The body is going to do everything it can to mobilize the stored energy it has &#8211; doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s in the form of carb, fat or protein. It\u2019s a smart process, but not ideal for someone trying to maximize muscle growth.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-81f10ea elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"81f10ea\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-97b6211\" data-id=\"97b6211\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f2b96ad\" data-id=\"f2b96ad\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6bd6592 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6bd6592\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Elevated cortisol can inhibit sleep<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0b72ea0\" data-id=\"0b72ea0\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b77963c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b77963c\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-821455a\" data-id=\"821455a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55c5e4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55c5e4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Under normal, not stressed conditions, cortisol rises in the morning and falls in the evening. This rise and fall makes us feel awake and alert during the day and sleepy and relaxed in the evening.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">When stressed, cortisol stays high all day, or does other wonky things like rise in the evening instead of in the morning. This can lead to issues falling or staying asleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Not enough sleep leads to a host of problems that you may or may not realize:<\/span><\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">poor recovery from exercise<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">poor performance in the gym<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk for injury<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">increased chance of making unhealthy food choices (high sugar, high fat, simple processed foods)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">excessive caffeine intake<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Coupled together these problems could mean inhibited fat loss and lean muscle gain &#8211; not ideal!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d5bf9f8 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"d5bf9f8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1db3225 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1db3225\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f36ee21\" data-id=\"f36ee21\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce60d28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ce60d28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">So, while stress may inhibit lean muscle growth, also remember that not all stress is bad. Having some stress leads to motivation and the drive to do well &#8211; which is good!
